Mountains Underwater: Mingulay

2018

plywood, glass tiles, pool rails, biodegradable water globules, plaster of paris, chicken wire, four-channel sound composition

Mingulay conveys a personal experience of visiting the remote Scottish island of the same name, located at the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides. Presently uninhabited by humans, a variety of birds have claimed the isle for themselves and organise all their business from the enormous cliffs that face the Atlantic Ocean. The installation interprets the moment of peering over the edge of Mingulay’s cliffs and encountering a sonic world reminiscent of a raucous swimming pool hall.

Mingulay was presented at Hidden Door 2018 festival in Leith, Scotland.

Many thanks to our friend Robin Cochrane, without whom this installation would not have been possible.
